Mary Barley

Having served as Chairperson of the Everglades Foundation since her husband’s untimely death in 1995 in a plane crash while on Everglades business, Barley currently serves as Vice Chairperson of the Foundation. She is also President of The Everglades Trust and serves on the Boards of the National Coalition for Marine Conservation, World Wildlife Fund Marine Leadership Committee, Atlantic Salmon Federation (U.S.) and the Sierra Club Foundation. Barley has received many national and community awards and accolades for her commitment to the environment, including Time magazine's "Hero for the Planet." Barley is a resident of Islamorada, Fla.

Christopher H. Buckley

Christopher H. Buckley graduated from the Harvard Law School. He was a partner at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, one of the largest law firms in the United States with multiple domestic and overseas offices, and was a member of the firm's Washington, D.C. office.  Buckley founded and has chaired the firm's Environment & Natural Resources Practice Group, of whom more than 50 attorneys are members and whose clients have included many Fortune 500 companies.  He has been named one of the best environmental lawyers by Chambers USA – America's Leading Lawyers for Business; The Best Lawyers in America; Guide to the World's Leading Environmental Lawyers; Who's Who Legal: USA – Environment; Environment Expert Guide; Washingtonian's Best Environmental Lawyers List; and Washington, D.C. Super Lawyers. He devotes considerable time to pro bono activities. Buckley represented the Atlantic Salmon Federation in its successful petition to have the Atlantic Salmon listed as an endangered species in the few remaining Maine rivers in which it spawns. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Atlantic Salmon Federation and has been a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the Environmental Law Institute. He has also served as President of the Barker Foundation, a non-profit adoption agency in Washington, D.C. A fly-fisherman for almost his entire life, he has fished for Atlantic salmon in North America and Europe for more than 25 years. He also fishes for steelhead trout in British Columbia and tarpon, permit and bonefish in Florida. He is a member of the Ristigouche Salmon Club and owns homes on the Grande Cascapedia River in Quebec and on Islamorada in the Florida Keys.

Jimmy Buffett

Singer/songwriter/author Jimmy Buffett uses his travels and storytelling skills to explain the world at large to his fans. He has recorded more than 40 records, most of which have gone gold, platinum or multi-platinum. Buffett is also the author of four books. He is one of only six authors in the history of the New York Times Bestseller List to have reached #1 on both their fiction and non-fiction lists. He is a producer, along with Frank Marshall, of the 2006 film Hoot, based on Florida author Carl Hiaasen's Newbery award-winning novel. Jimmy received Grammy nominations in 2004 and 2005. Throughout all of his creative works, Jimmy celebrates and advocates for Florida's natural resources and colorful natural heritage. 

Barbara Whitney Carr

Barbara Whitney Carr, who also serves as co-chair of the Everglades Foundation’s Advisory Committee, has extensive leadership experience with non-profit organizations. She spent nearly 20 years at the Lincoln Park Zoological Society, serving as its executive director and president. Carr was also president of the Chicago Botanic Garden for more than a decade. Carr helped create the Academic Affairs Program at the Botanic Garden and teamed with Northwestern University, the Illinois Institute of Technology and the University of Illinois to develop several outstanding academic programs. The American Public Garden Association presented her with the 2007 Award of Merit, the organization's highest honor. Carr earned a degree from Denison University in Ohio, an M.A. from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Landscape Architecture and an M.S. from Northwestern University in Plant Biology and Conservation. She currently serves on numerous boards including Lake Forest College, the Chicago Botanic Garden and the Garden Conservancy. Carr is a resident of Lake Forest, Ill., and Hobe Sound, Fla. 

Carlos de la Cruz

 

De la Cruz, born in Philadelphia, but raised in Madrid, Spain, has years of experience in M&A, startups and operations in the beverage and automobile industries in Florida and Latin America. For almost ten years, he was President of Eagle Brands, Inc., the exclusive Anheuser-Busch wholesaler for Miami-Dade and Monroe counties, from 1998 to 2007. In addition to being president of Eagle Brands, Inc., he also became president of Miami Honda, Central Hyundai, Sunshine Ford, and Maroone Chevrolet. De la Cruz is a founding member of the Americas Gateway Chapter for Young Presidents Organization. He is currently Chairman of the Board of Our Kids of Miami-Dade and Monroe, the community-based care provider for foster children with over 4,500 children in care. He obtained his Bachelors of Science in Accounting from Boston College and his Masters of Business Administration from the University of Miami. He is fluent in Spanish and French and has been a resident of Miami for since 1975.

Thomas Davidson

 

Thomas Davidson is currently principal owner and Chairman of Nutech Precision Metals Ltd. Davidson is also Chairman of Azure Dynamics Inc., Quarry Hill Group, a director of MDC Partners Inc., TLC Vision Inc. and Occulogix Incorporated. He is past International Chairman of The Young Presidents Organization and the World Presidents Organization, Vice President of Friends of the Florida Keys Marine Sanctuary and past Vice Chairman of the Pennekamp Research Institute. He is also Chairman of Ocean Reef Medical Center and Chairman and founder of Bonefish & Tarpon Unlimited. Davidson is past director of several NYSE and NASDAQ listed companies and numerous civic and charitable institutions. Davidson is a resident of Ocean Reef in the Florida Keys.

Joseph Zachary Duke III

Duke, president of Jacksonville-based Off Road Holdings, is an industrial designer and entrepreneur whose business life has involved various manufacturing activities as well as a partnership in an advertising agency. He is a third-generation Floridian and resides with his wife, Jennifer, in Ponte Vedra Beach and Hobe Sound, Fla., as well as Oldwick, New Jersey. Duke and his wife, who maintain a family farm in New Jersey as well as Florida timberland, have been deeply involved in environmental issues for many years.

Duke served as a trustee at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution for many years, which allowed him to pursue his fascination with ocean science and engineering. In 1990, he sponsored the Jason Project for the Duval County Public Schools to get children interested in science. In 1997, he helped his friend, Dr. Robert Ballard found the Institute for Exploration. Through a family charitable foundation, The River Branch Foundation, Duke and his wife support various scientific and conservation non-profit organizations, including The Nature Conservancy (where his wife is a Florida board member), Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution. He currently serves on the board of directors of Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution Foundation in Fort Pierce, Fla.

An avid outdoorsman, angler, and aviator, his spirit of adventure has taken him from deep-water archaeology in the Mediterranean to desert racing in Baja. He loves flying small aerobatic airplanes as well as his 1950s vintage Grumman seaplane. Duke is currently engaged in a long-term ecosystem restoration project of an 830-acre commercial pine plantation near Palatka, Fla., returning the property to its natural condition. 

Marshall Field, V

Marshall Field V is the fifth generation of a Chicago family whose activities have included merchandising, real estate, publishing, communications and civic affairs. He is currently Chairman of the Board of The Field Corporation, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Cabot, Cabot & Forbes and Chairman of The Old Mountain Company, Inc. He is a graduate of Harvard College and has served as publisher of the Chicago Sun Times and the Chicago Daily News. Field has been a member of the Board of Trustees for the Art Institute since 1965 and a member of the Board of Trustees of Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago since 1970. In 1981, Mr. and Mrs. Field established the Jamee and Marshall Field Foundation, which focuses on environmental and conservation issues, the arts and culture, education and health care. He was elected to the Executive Committee of The Chicago Community Trust in January 1999. Field is also a member of the Board of Directors of The Field Foundation of Illinois, which focuses on urban and community affairs and community welfare. An avid fisherman, Field has a strong interest in conservation and serves as Chairman of the National Council of the World Wildlife Fund, a member of The Nature Conservancy, The Atlantic Salmon Federation and Chairman of the Board of Visitors of the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University. Field is a resident of Hobe Sound, Fla.

Ellin Goetz

Goetz is a career advocate for environmental causes who combines her experience as a landscape architect with several years of community service. She has been the past chairperson of the Conservancy of Southwest Florida and is currently on the board of Naples Community Hospital, Naples Chamber of Commerce and Big Cypress Basin of the South Florida Water Management District. Her commitment to her community has earned numerous awards, including receiving the "Naples Daily News Outstanding Citizen Award," in 2004 and the Conservancy of Southwest Florida 2010 "Eagle Award." Goetz is president of her own firm GOETZ+STROPES LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS, INC., located in Naples. She graduated from Vassar College in New York with a bachelor's degree in art history and fine arts and attended the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where she attained her Master's degree in landscape architecture.

Paul Tudor Jones II

Paul Tudor Jones II serves as Chairman of The Everglades Foundation. He is founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Tudor Group of companies. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia. In 1983, Jones formed Tudor Investment Corporation as the Tudor Group’s primary asset management affiliate.  He commits a substantial amount of his personal time to philanthropic and natural resource conservation efforts. Jones is founder and a director of the Robin Hood Foundation, an organization dedicated to the singular mission of ending poverty in New York City.  Jones is a resident of Greenwich, Conn., and has a home in Islamorada, Fla.

John P. Keller

John P. Keller, a resident of Hobe Sound, Fla., and Chicago, is chairman of the Keller Group, Inc., a privately held corporation based in Northfield, Ill. The Keller Group, Inc., is an iron and steel manufacturing entity. Its subsidiary companies include Meadville Forging Company, L.P. Meadville, Pa.; Virginia Forge Company, Buchanan, Va.; and Carolina Forge Company, LLC, Wilson, N.C. Keller has a diverse corporate background and has worked in a number of industries ranging from automotive to publishing. He received his bachelor’s degree from Yale University and his M.B.A. from the Harvard School of Business. Keller has supported many civic and social causes including the Rush Medical Center, the Museum of Science and Industry, The Economic Club of Chicago and the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre. Keller and his wife Judy have three children, Lizabeth, a real estate executive; Susan, a graduate of Colgate University; and son, Jack, president of the Keller Group.

James A. Kushlan

James A. Kushlan, a scientist by background, is the founder and past chair of the Waterbird Conservation for the Americas. He is also the current president and trustee of the Bahamas Environment Trust. In addition, he serves on the board of directors of the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center and Friends of the Everglades. Kushlan was a former board member of the Tropical Audubon Society and was a senior research biologist for the National Park Service for almost ten years. He has published eight books and has been featured in more than 200 other publications. Kushlan graduated from the University of Miami with baccalaureate, master's and doctoral degrees. 

David Lawrence, Jr.

David Lawrence, Jr., is the former publisher of The Miami Herald. Lawrence, a longtime resident of South Florida has an extensive background in civic and social engagement. In addition to his position on the Everglades Foundation board, he currently serves as president of The Early Childhood Initiative Foundation and “University Scholar for Early Childhood Development and Readiness,” at the University of Florida. Gov. Charlie Crist named him to the Children’s Cabinet in 2007. In 2002, he led the campaign for The Children’s Trust, a dedicated source of early intervention care funding for children in Miami-Dade County. Lawrence is also a board member of the Foundation for Child Development in New York and the Executive Advisory Board for the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. In addition, he is a board member and former chair of the Early Learning Coalition of Miami-Dade and Monroe. He and his wife Roberta, a master’s graduate in social work from Barry University in Miami, live in Coral Gables and have three daughters, two sons and four grandchildren. His many honors include: “Humanitarian of the Year,” from both the American Red Cross and the Beacon Council “Family of the Year,” from Family Counseling Services, “Father of the Year,” by the South Florida Father’s Day Council and the Lawton and Rhea Chiles Advocacy Award.

Garrison DuPont Lickle

Garrison DuPont Lickle is president and CEO of Chilton Trust Management, LLC. Prior to joining Chilton, Lickle was regional president of Lehman Brothers Trust Company and managing director of Lehman Brothers and Neuberger Berman. After the Barclays acquisition of Lehman Brothers, Lickle was a managing director of Barclays Wealth. He served as chairman and CEO of U.S. Trust Company of Florida before joining Lehman. Lickle was a partner with the law firm of Gunster, Yoakley & Stewart P.A. (now known as GUNSTER), and started his career as a managing partner of Winthrop, Stimson, Putnam, & Roberts (now known as PILLSBURY WINTHROP). Lickle is a member of the Executive Committee for the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, where he also serves as treasurer and chairman of the Finance Committee. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Palm Beach Civic Association and serves as a director and secretary/treasurer. He serves as a board member for the Cleveland Clinic Heart Center in Cleveland (OH) and Weston (Fla.), the Rehabilitation Center for Children and Adults in Palm Beach and is a founding member of the Massachusetts General Hospital Leadership Council on Psychiatry. He was chairman of the Town of Palm Beach Shore Protection Board and of the Governors Club of the Palm Beaches. Lickle received his BA and MBA from Rollins College, and his JD from the University of Richmond.

Jon Mills

Jon Mills is Dean Emeritus of the University of Florida Levin College of Law, where he also is a Professor of Law and Founding Director of the Center for Governmental Responsibility. He served as Dean from 1999 to 2003. He has authored books, law review articles and reports on constitutional and environmental issues. He served in the Florida House of Representatives for ten years, including two years as Speaker of the House. He is a graduate of Stetson University; the University of Florida College of Law (with honors); and the Senior Executives in State and Local Government Program at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Mills serves as the Foundation's secretary of the board.

Jack Nicklaus

Jack Nicklaus’ golfing career has spanned five decades, with 105 professional tournament victories worldwide and a record 18 major-championship titles. He has been named “Golfer of the Century” or “Golfer of the Millennium” by almost every major golf publication in the world. He was named Individual Male Athlete of the Century by Sports Illustrated, and one of the 10 Greatest Athletes of the Century by ESPN. In 2001, Jack was honored with the first-ever ESPY Lifetime Achievement Award and received the Vince Lombardi Award of Excellence. Jack has been involved in the design of more than 250 courses open for play worldwide. He was named GolfWorld’s Architect of the Year in 1993. In 1999, Golf Digest named him the world’s leading active designer. Nicklaus is also chairman of the privately held Nicklaus Companies. Jack and his wife Barbara have a long history of involvement in numerous charitable activities, from junior golf to children’s hospitals to several scholarship foundations. Barbara and Jack Nicklaus are the guiding light for the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation, which supports numerous pediatric health-care services, including the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital at St. Mary’s, in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Robert Parks

Robert Parks is partner in the Coral Gables, Florida law firm of Robert L. Parks, P.L. Parks is one of the nation's premier trial lawyers specializing in personal injury and commercial litigation, focusing in the areas of wrongful death, products liability, aviation law and class-action litigation. Parks is involved in numerous civic organizations and has served as Chair of the Miami River Commission and as Chairman of the Environmental Regulation Commission for the State of Florida. Parks also served as Chairman of the Miami River Coordinating Committee and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Nature Conservancy and l000 Friends of Florida. Parks was presented with the 1000 Friends of Florida award for Outstanding Leadership on Legal Advocacy from 1987–2000, and received The Marine Council’s Person of the Year award and an environmental service award from Florida Defenders of the Environment in l984. Parks was named Environmentalist of the Year in 1986-1987 by the Florida Audubon Society.

Nicholas G. Penniman IV

Nicholas G. Penniman IV, is a resident of Naples, Fla., and Baltimore, Md., and former publisher of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Penniman has been deeply involved in environmental advocacy work; he served as chair of American Rivers in Washington, D.C., and was the board chair of The Conservancy of Southwest Florida in Naples. He is past chairman of the Washington University Interdisciplinary Environmental Law Clinic, past chairman of Forest Park Forever, served a four-year term as a member of the Collier County Environmental Advisory Council and is a registered Florida Master Naturalist. Penniman is a graduate of Princeton University (Religion), and did graduate work at the Wharton Graduate School of the University of Pennsylvania (Finance) and at Washington University in St. Louis where he received an M.A. in American Culture Studies in 1999.

W. Douglas Pitts, Sr.

W. Douglas Pitts, born in Otter Creek, Fla., has been a resident of Miami since 1947. He is President and Chairman of Courtelis Company, a Miami-based real estate development company, having joined Courtelis Company in 1965. Pitts is treasurer of the Everglades Foundation board.

Nathaniel P. Reed

Nathaniel Reed currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Everglades Foundation. He received a B.A. from Trinity College, Conn., and served as an officer in the U.S. Air Force military intelligence throughout Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Upon returning to Florida, he became Vice President and then President of the Hobe Sound Company, a real estate and holding company, which owned the Jupiter Island Club. Mr. Reed has served seven governors. He is best known as the Chairman of the Commission on Florida's Environmental Future. He also served as Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Fish and Wildlife and Parks in the Nixon and Ford administrations. He also serves as a Member of the Board of Hope Rural School, a school for the children of migrant workers. Mr. Reed is a former Board Member and Vice Chairman of the National Audubon Society and the Nature Conservancy, Board Member of the National Parks & Conservation Association, American Rivers and serves as emeriti on the boards of the Natural Resources Defense Council and 1000 Friends of Florida, which he helped form. Reed has served on the Board of the National Geographic Society since 1988.

William Riley

William Riley is a corporate executive, writer and conservationist. He received his AB from University of Notre Dame and an LLB from Yale University. Along with his wife, Laura Riley, he authored Guide to the National Wildlife Refuges (1979), which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. He and Laura also wrote Nature’s Strongholds, published in 2005. This book won a Lowell Thomas Award from the Society of American Travel Writers, and an award from the Outdoor Writers' Foundation. He received the Lifetime Conservation award from the National Audubon Society in 2000, and the Conservationist of the Year award from the Everglades Coalition in 2001. He has served on the boards of the National Wildlife Refuge Association, Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Association and the National Audubon Society.

Stuart D. Strahl, Ph.D.

Dr. Strahl currently is President/CEO of the Chicago Zoological Society and Director of the Brookfield Zoo. Prior to arriving in Chicago, he served as founding President/CEO of Audubon of Florida and VP and Everglades Conservation Director of the National Audubon Society. Dr. Strahl worked for the Wildlife Conservation Society as a field zoologist in Venezuela and as the founding Director of Latin American Programs. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from Bates College, and his Ph.D. in Biology from the State University of New York at Albany. He is the principal author of numerous scientific and popular publications. An active outdoorsman, he is Life Member of the Society for Conservation Biology, Elective Member of the American Ornithologists’ Union and Regular Member of the Boone and Crockett Club.

Judy Keller

Judy Keller is co-chair of the Everglades Foundation Advisory Board and has considerable experience in effectively organizing and spurring committees into action in the non-profit sector, including her time as a board member of the Lincoln Park Zoological Society; former Chair of the Women's Board, the Art Institute of Chicago; governing member, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and former president, Kenilworth Garden Club, Chapter of Garden Clubs of America.
