Position Title: Director of Communications


Nature of Work
The Director of Communications will serve as the principal communications liaison to position the Foundation as the premier organization promoting the mission of advancing Everglades' restoration.

The ideal candidate will meet the following criteria:

Academic qualifications:
• Undergraduate degree required, preferably in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, English, Public Affairs or similar disciplines.

Professional experience:
• At least six years of experience of progressive leadership experience in public relations, public affairs and/or communications;
• A demonstrated track record of designing and executing successful public affairs campaigns;
• Proven success working strategically and cooperatively in a team environment;
• Experience in budget preparation;
• Experience working with board members or high-level opinion leaders

• Strong communication skills with public officials and agency staff;
• Ability to translate technical information into lay terms;

• Flexibility to manage multiple projects on tight deadlines

Responsibilities

Planning and Strategic Development:
• Develop a comprehensive communications plan for the Foundation;
• Execute a communications strategy to maximize exposure of the Foundation;
• Execute strategies to build the Everglades Foundation "brand" with a special emphasis on opinion leaders, policymakers, the media and potential donors;
• Implement strategies to utilize new media coverage of the Foundation;
• Build effective coalitions with potential allies

On-going Responsibilities:
• Generate sustained, proactive earned media coverage of Foundation priorities, Everglades restoration developments and restoration success stories;
• Aggressively inject Foundation voices into news coverage of the Everglades;
• Promote scheduled interviews and other media opportunities for EF voices;
• Cultivate relationships with statewide and national media;
• Manage and produce monthly reports on Foundation activities to the board of directors;
• Generate regular communications to Everglades Foundation donors;
• Produce regular Foundation newsletters, electronic updates and periodicals;
• Manage online communications providing fresh online content regularly;
• Working with CEO, manage Multimedia Associate and communications consultants to execute overall communications plan;
• Maintain media contact databases;
• Prepare reports for presentation at board meetings;
• Secure strategic speaking engagements;

Major Efforts:
• Promote Foundation donor events, like the annual ForEverglades Benefit;
• Produce the Everglades Foundation Annual Report with staff input;
• Organize Everglades Summits in Tallahassee or Washington, D.C.;
• Develop and launch the "Everglades Nation" campaign;
• Develop the annual budget, manage expenditures and prepare contracts for the work of the Communications Department;
