Congress Votes to Rename Hobe Sound Wildlife Refuge for Nathaniel Reed

Environmental Giant Helped Found the Everglades Foundation

Palmetto Bay, Fla. — Both Houses of Congress today approved S. 3456, a measure sponsored by Sen. Bill Nelson to redesignate the Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge as the “Nathaniel P. Reed Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge.” The measure was co-sponsored in the Senate by Sen. Marco Rubio and advanced in the House on the Suspension Calendar.

“For decades, ‘Nat’ Reed stood defiant against those who would drain wetlands and clear the mangrove jungles and swamps that make Florida unique,” said Everglades Foundation CEO Eric Eikenberg in response to the Senate’s action today. “He was a powerful voice for wildlife and natural resources his entire life.”

Eikenberg noted that Reed helped found the Everglades Foundation and served on its board of directors until his death in July.

Eikenberg recalled that Reed’s environmental victories included convincing Governor Claude Kirk against draining, paving and developing the Big Cypress Swamp into a massive jetport in 1969. Later, as assistant secretary of the Interior in the Nixon and Ford administrations, he led successful fights to ban DDT and to enact the Endangered Species Act of 1973.
