On Saturday, August 16th the Everglades Foundation participated in the Deering Estate at Cutler’s Fee-Free Family P.L.A.Y Day, an event series created to honor partner organizations and the community. The August event focused on teachers and environmental educators, providing a perfect opportunity to educate attendees about our new Everglades Literacy initiative.
Guests were invited to join in one of the activities from the Everglades K-12 Curriculum titled “Hurry for a Habitat”, where participants were asked to place plants and animals in their proper habitat. We were pleased to see how many children already knew a lot about the Everglades ecosystem!
We were also joined by Miss Florida 2014, Tori Cowen, who assisted with the hands-on educational activity and answered questions about our Everglades Literacy program. As Miss Florida, Tori’s platform includes a commitment to bringing together organizations that are committed to informing and encouraging girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), providing numerous and diverse opportunities for the next generation of environmental leaders.
The Deering Estate at Cutler will host another Fee-Free P.L.A.Y. day on Saturday, September 20th. It’s a wonderful place for “P.L.A.Y.” – Preservation, Learning, Adventure, Year-Round – and to enjoy the many tours, educational programs, and special events that the Estate has to offer.
