Statement of The Everglades Foundation CEO Eric Eikenberg on the Lifting of the “State of Emergency” Caused by Toxic Algae Outbreaks

Categories: Press Releases

“The State of Emergency caused by the harmful Lake Okeechobee discharges that devastated communities for 242 days has expired, but we should not forget that this is an environmental disaster whose magnitude is measured not in days but in jobs lost, businesses closed, homes not sold and people made ill by toxic algae.

“We are one heavy rainy season away from this environmental tragedy occurring again. The status quo is not acceptable, and this year’s events should impress upon all Floridians the importance of investment in a water storage reservoir south of Lake Okeechobee, as was recognized by Congress and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers nearly two decades ago. We are grateful for the leadership of Florida Senate President Joe Negron and other responsible legislators for advancing this critical project.”
