GEORGE BARLEY

FOUNDER

Mr. Barley died in a tragic small plane crash shortly after founding the Everglades Foundation in 1995 with his dear friend and co-founder Paul Tudor Jones II. Mr. Barley, a 7th generation Floridian, was born in Jacksonville in 1934. He graduated from Harvard University in 1956. He was president of George Barley, Inc., a real estate firm. Over the years, Mr. Barley became deeply concerned about the environment and particularly the need to restore and protect America’s Everglades. Mr. Barley served on numerous environmental boards and commissions and led the battle to make polluters pay for removing their pollution from America’s Everglades. After his death, his wife Mary Barley continued his legacy by helping to make the Everglades Foundation a leader in Everglades restoration.
