Everglades Foundation Statement on Passage of ‘Legacy Florida’ Legislation

Palmetto Bay, Fla. – The Everglades Foundation today released the following statement, attributable to its CEO Eric Eikenberg, regarding the final passage of the ‘Legacy Florida’ bill, sponsored by Senator Joe Negron (R-Stuart) and Representative Gayle Harrell (R-Stuart), which will establish a dedicated revenue source to restore the Florida America’s Everglades.

“The Everglades Foundation lauds Senator Negron and Representative Harrell for their tireless work to establish dedicated funding for Everglades restoration and carry out projects outlined in the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan under the ‘Legacy Florida’ bill.

“We also thank House Speaker Steve Crisafulli (R-Merritt Island) for his leadership on water policy this session, as well as the Florida House and Senate for passing this sound investment that will protect and preserve America’s Everglades this national treasure.  This natural treasure  The Everglades is an economic engine for the state and a source of drinking water for millions of Floridians and tourists.

“As this good measure heads to the Governor for his signature, we remain hopeful that he too will support this dedicated revenue source use of Amendment 1 funding that will allow the state to expedite planning and construction of critical restoration projects to significantly reduce damaging discharges from Lake Okeechobee into the Caloosahatchee and St. Lucie rivers.”
