Hey Miami, Broward and the Keys, did you know your water comes from the Everglades?
That's right! This massive ecosystem filters, stores, and supplies our drinking water… and the water you use to brush your teeth, wash your dishes, fill your pools, and make your cafecito.
How does it work?
The Everglades recharges the Biscayne Aquifer, an underground freshwater river right under our feet.
It supplies the drinking water for millions of Floridians including you!
So what's the problem?
In the 1940's Florida was drained for development and agriculture.
Freshwater, that flowed south from Lake Okeechobee through the Everglades and into Florida Bay, was cut off.
