On April 17, 2019, board members and staff from The Everglades Foundation attended the dedication ceremony for the Nathaniel P. Reed Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge was renamed in honor of Reed, a Founding Director of The Everglades Foundation and a lifelong champion of South Florida’s unique subtropical habitats and fauna.

The Foundation’s CEO, Eric Eikenberg, spoke at the ceremony along with other distinguished guests including U.S. Congressman Brian Mast (FL-18) and former Florida Senator Bill Nelson—who along with Senator Marco Rubio introduced the legislation in September 2018 to have the refuge renamed in honor of Reed who died on July 11, 2018.

Eric Eikenberg Statement

The Everglades Foundation’s CEO, Eric Eikenberg, giving remarks at the refuge dedication ceremony.

In Eikenberg’s remarks, he reflected “of all the lessons he taught me, of all the storms that he helped steer us through, the one I will remember most is that, in the whirlwind of politics, what is most important is to keep focused and to concentrate always on what you can accomplish.”
