International competition with $10m prize hopes to solve water runoff problem

NBC News, May 6, 2018 Nine international teams are trying to find a solution to harmful algae blooms caused by agricultural runoff in a competition with big environmental implications.

NBC speaks with The Everglades Foundation about the George Barley Water Prize – an initiative created to identify scalable technologies and incentivize breakthroughs in lowering the cost of phosphorus pollution removal from freshwater.


Named after visionary co-founder of The Everglades Foundation, George Barley, the Prize was designed to inspire groundbreaking innovation to remove excess phosphorus from freshwater sources.
